Update on Agassiz Renaming Process
STAFF RECOMMENDED ACTION:
The Indigenous Youths of Flagstaff have worked to change the name of Agassiz Peak located within the San Francisco Peaks. The youth group would like to update the Flagstaff City Council on the process and outcome of their work through the Arizona Board of Geographic and Historic Names. The group has worked to change the Agassiz Peak name to a Öo'mawki, a Hopi name which means "home or place of the clouds".
An application was submitted by the Indigenous Youths of Flagstaff to the Arizona Board of Geographic and Historic Names requesting a name change regarding Agassiz Peak. The youth group appeared before City Council on 4/11/2023 requesting support in response to the official letter from the Arizona Board asking for comment from Flagstaff City Council. The Flagstaff City Council agreed on a Letter of Support for this endeavor. During the agenda item, a quick introduction will be provided by Rose Toehe, the City's Coordinator for Indigenous Initiatives, and hear from the Indigenous Youth of Flagstaff to present an update on the positive outcome of their work.
