Mission Statement and Land Acknowledgment

MISSION STATEMENT

A commission to foster support, respect, awareness and appreciation of diversity among all citizens of Flagstaff.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

The Commission on Diversity Awareness humbly acknowledges the ancestral homelands of this area’s Indigenous nations and original stewards. These lands, still inhabited by Native descendants, border mountains sacred to Indigenous peoples. We honor them, their legacies, their traditions, and their continued contributions. We celebrate their past, present, and future generations who will forever know this place as home.

The Mission Statement was read by Commissioner Gebler and the Land Acknowledgment was read by Commissioner Tucci.

Upcoming Opportunities and Announcements

The staff liaison informed the group that on November 1, 2022 appointments for four new Commission members will be made at City Council
Chair Toner provided an update on the Library's Equity in Action Committee. The Committee met on 8/12 at 2:30pm. The group developed concepts of agency based diversity based principles to introduce to all agencies in the city. They also discussed having 2 Pride oriented Biannual workshops per year, in May and November. And finally, they discussed an LGBT adult Book Club which will be held on 12/12, in person or online.

Consideration and Approval of Minutes:

Vice Chair Gebler motioned for the September 21, 2022 regular meeting minutes to be approved as written.
Chair Toner seconded the motion.
Motion approved unanimously.

Date of Next Meeting - November 16, 2022 at 1:30pm

Staff liaison reminded the group that Commissioner Pino will be on leave and that the new Commissioners will be notified of the meeting date as quickly as possible following their appointment.

Presentation from Flagstaff Police Department on Diversity efforts within the the department.

The Commissioners listened to the presentation from Flagstaff Police Department on Diversity efforts within the department.
Following the presentation the Commissioners asked questions. The Commission has additional questions and will email them to the Chief.

Reports/Discussion Items

A.

General Commission Updates:

The Commissioners thanked Commissioner Duke and Commissioner Tucci for their service to the Commission.
Lisa R. Keita provided an introduction as the new staff liaison. Alan Keay had to leave the meeting early but it was acknowledged that Alan would be the other point of contact for the Commission moving forward since the current Staff Liaison, Jessica Vigorito, will no longer be the Staff Liaison after November 1st.

Recommendations to Council

Anti Camping Ordinance

The Commissioners listened to the liaison update which included the previous Council discussion on this topic.
After discussing, the Commissioners would like to bring this update and item back to the January agenda when Commissioner Pino returns.

Renaming of the Peaks Workgroup Update

Pending follow up from the High School group on when to send the Commission's recommendation to Council.

Equitable Restroom Recommendation

The item is currently in the Staff Future Agenda Items queue which means it is waiting for some research and staff work before it moves forward again.

Discuss next steps for this item or wait until the next report comes out.
