Mission Statement and Land Acknowledgment
MISSION STATEMENT
A commission to foster support, respect, awareness and appreciation of diversity among all citizens of Flagstaff.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Commission on Diversity Awareness humbly acknowledges the ancestral homelands of this area’s Indigenous nations and original stewards. These lands, still inhabited by Native descendants, border mountains sacred to Indigenous peoples. We honor them, their legacies, their traditions, and their continued contributions. We celebrate their past, present, and future generations who will forever know this place as home.

Upcoming Opportunities and Announcements |
| |
Chair Toner announces the Pride Parade that will occur during Pride month. She also mentions at the downtown library location the presenter will be Al White in the Living Room for their monthly presentation. Lastly, she reminded the group of the diversity page on the library’s website.
Kim Robinson the project coordinator for the Live Life Experience Project – an extension of the Southside Community Association, announces to the group that on January 22nd from 2pm to 4pm at the Murdoch Center they will host their monthly live community dialogue to celebrate the principals of Kwanzaa. She also informs the group of the community dinner that the group hosts every 4th Sunday of the month. This month’s dinner will take place on January 22nd at the Murdoch Center.
Commissioner Camp informs the group of the book club she participates in that focuses on women in literature and asks if anyone would be interested in joining them on Sundays at 11am. |

Commission agreed to make a formal recommendation to City Council on December 21, 2022, to add two official City Holidays. Renaming "Day after Thanksgiving" as Native American Heritage Day. Designate Juneteenth as a City Holiday as it is currently a Federal Holiday. Commission to draft formal recommendation to City Council for review by all commission members to possibly present by February or March. |

Chair Toner lets the group know she will be reaching out to the Indigenous Commission’s staff liaison to set up collaboration with their commission for both the day after Thanksgiving and Juneteenth to become City holidays. She will send the email today in hopes to begin collaborating. |

Future Priorities:
Downtown Business Alliance Commission Work Group to give update on plan to address current issues and opportunities by Downtown Business Alliance.

Commissioner Kidd informs the group she reached out to the Downtown Business Alliance on two separate occasions but was unable to get a response from the contact she believes to be accurate. She will continue to reach out in hopes to contact someone. Staff Liaison Alan Keay mentions he will also attempt to contact someone with the Downtown Business Alliance. Updates to follow next month. |

Proclamations Work Group Update:
- Jean Toner, Black History Month February. Transfer of leadership of work group to Bethany Camp and Carolyn Kidd to continue with proclamation and present final draft to commission for approval.

Commissioner Camp reads over the Black History Month – February Proclamation draft. Commissioner Pino motions to approve the proclamation, Commissioner Camp seconds the motion to approve. The group approved the proclamation unanimously. Commissioner Kidd agreed to work with Kimberley Robinson on presenting the proclamation for City Council.
Chair Toner updates the group on discussions from the library work group. She mentions Barbara Tait’s report on the LEA meeting and how there are plans to integrate new equity norms into Human Resources training programs within the City. This plan will be proposed to City Leadership and the EAC.
Chair Toner also informs the group that in April the Library will be hosting a diversity presentation. The LGBTQ+ panel will present on the History of Pride and Chair toner will present on behalf of CODA. The group is also looking to collaborate with the library on collecting oral stories from the LGBTQ+ community in Flagstaff. They are currently working to receive clearance to begin working on this project. Commissioner Kidd, Commissioner Sanchez, Commissioner Jarvis, and Commissioner Camp all expressed interest in becoming a participant in this project. |

Staff Liaison Alan Keay gives an update that Chris Rhode from the Municipal Equity Index will be on the agenda for next month to present any updates regarding the Municipal Equity Index. |

Recommendations to Council (updates and future items)
Anti-Camping Ordinance: Moved to January 2023.This Recommendation item will be held until Commissioner Pino returns in January of 2023 from a leave of absence. |

Commissioner Pino updates the group on the progress of the Anti-Camping ordinance. She asks Chair Toner what the next steps to move the ordinance forward. Staff Liaison Alan Key will set up a meeting with Commissioner Pino and Chair Toner to set up a work group for this topic. |

- Darrell Marks and Youth Group to present update presentation on the Renaming Peaks Project.

- Discussion on Commemorative Flag for 2023 Black History Month.To collaborate with CODA and other community groups to develop a flag that would help represent the African American community for Black History Month better than the current representing flag does. Also, to discuss future opportunities for flag representation of community groups.

Commissioner Kidd spoke with Councilperson House regarding the Black History Month flag to discuss recommendations for a new flag design. Councilperson House would like to get a design together to take it to staff for cost estimates before the month of February. She asks that CODA focus more on the indigenous flag design with the Indigenous Commission to collaborate on a new design. |
